my visitor is here again

It's that time of the month again, the red flag is up, I have my monthly visitor, my menstrual period and that achy, crampy feeling in the abdomen.  We call it dysmenorrhea, this discomfort results from hormones called prostaglandis that cause contractions of the uterus.  It's good I don't get to experience nausea, vomiting, diarrhea like other women, only headache and the abdominal cramps.

We can lessen or relieve the pain with these few tips:

1. Get plenty of exercise.  If you are not a gym buff or a regular runner you can do the exercise a week before your period.  Or you can do a house cleaning a week before your period, this will serve you 2 purpose.

2. Use a heating pad. Heat can improve blood flow and reduce pelvic pain.
3. When resting or sleeping, lie on your back with a pillow under your knees to keep your legs elevated.
4. Take an effective, nonprescription pain reliever.  I use Advil, it's effective and so far, I don't feel any side effects unlike other pain reliever that upsets my stomach.  Pain reliever medicines have ibuprofen that helps relieve the pain by reducing the levels of the prostaglandis which causes the contractions.
