Domestic violence is a betrayal of trust. We all hope that the only place where we can be safe is at home. But when its stricken with violence, everyone is affected. There are basic truths on domestic violence that most of us might be unaware of.
- It's probably more common than we are ready to admit. Some surveys in specific places have shown as many as 50 to 70% of homes that have witnessed some form of abuse.

- This happens across cultures, class, age and religion

- No one deserves to be hit, and anybody who says otherwise is wrong.

- Although its mostly women who are abused by men, there are also instances when women abuse men.

- Everyone in the home is affected-there are no exceptions.

- Alcohol, substance abuse and unemployment are often used as excuses for abusing a family member. When one hurts another, the responsibility for doing so rests on the person who does it and not on any external factor.

- Victims of abuse often have a difficult time feeling powerful enough to leave a relationship, and find themselves in a cycle of wanting to leave and not being able to give up the relationship.

If you're thinking of staying in this kind of relationship because of your children, think again, your children do not need an abusive parent and environment, they need love, affection and care.
